Moulin Roty toys can be instantly recognised for their quirky design, imaginative characters and intricate attention to detail, from animal circus designs on a spinning top to the pinstripe detail on a fox’s trousers. It’s a brand with gorgeous products but also an interesting story.

Moulin Roty is a small communal village in western France, it started in 1972 by a community on a mission to create and sustain a more rewarding and healthier lifestyle. They purchased an old mill that was in ruins, renovating it over time to become a communal and creative space. Here, they began to make craft items.

In 1975 Moulin Roty had great success with its small car toy made from wood, foam and patterned fabric, it did well in markets and trade shows, they then started to design rag dolls and established themselves in the toy and nursery markets.

By 1980 Moulin Roty became a co-operative, securing company values of solidarity, sharing and respect whilst expanding. Sadly, the original workshop burnt down in 1988, triggering the relocation to Nort sur Erdre, 15 kilometres away, here they built up again from scratch.

In modern times, Moulin Roty toys still possess the magic of traditional toys engrained with history and love, everything is made with non-toxic and high-quality materials. All wood used is from forests that are managed ecologically, unlike many low-cost, plastic toys that are seriously damaging the planet.

As Vivienne Westwood says, “Buy less, choose well”, Moulin Roty toys will last and be cherished a lifetime.
